Developmental Screening

As children’s doctors, it is critically important to catch developmental delays early and conduct interventions promptly – it is part of our core mission as pediatricians. About 20% of children have developmental disorders. Yet only 20-30% of children with developmental disorders are identified before entering school, even though standardized developmental screening has been recommended by the AAP since 2001. Provider surveys suggest that fewer than half of providers are screening at recommended ages using evidence-based screens.

As a doctor, you are uniquely poised to:

  • Implement or improve developmental screening in your practice
  • Increase your awareness of and collaboration with early intervention specialists and familiarize yourself with other local resources to provide referrals to families
  • Communicate with other professionals that touch the lives of young children in your practice (early educators/home visitors) to identify strengths and concerns
  • Advocate for policies, practices and investments that support developmental screening
