Program Description:

Building Relationships in Infant-Toddler Early Education (BRITE) is an intensive semi-virtual model of infant toddler mental health consultation targeting family/group family (FGF) childcare settings that plans to utilize a novel assessment process to both measure change and inform the planning and execution of the consultation. The BRITE model’s goal is three-fold, 1) provide effective and efficient support to FGF childcare providers in Nassau and Queens Counties, 2) demonstrate the utility of a new measure in this context, and 3) inform effort to build a system of infant toddler mental health consultation by providing implementation lessons with the goal of scaling across communities

Position Description:

The Early Childhood Consultant (ECC) will be a Part Time employee of Docs for Tots, consulting to early childcare providers in family and group family settings. The ECC is an expert in the promotion of positive early childhood mental health. The ECC will possess skills that include a thorough knowledge of early childhood development/mental health coupled with an understanding of family dynamics and relationship building on an individual/family, provider, and community level. This position will represent BRITE, its partners and its services in a positive and professional manner and adhere to both agencies best practices, guidelines, policies, and procedures as established. The ECC will have the opportunity to participate in the implementation and evaluation of a new mental health assessment tool.

Specifically, the ECC will have the following responsibilities and accompanying qualifications:

Responsibilities:

  • Team with family/group family providers to identify and provide interventions for young children, birth to three, who may be at risk of suspension and/or expulsion from care
  • Act as a resource regarding early childhood development with emphasis on emotional and behavioral health and the importance of relationship between the child and parent/guardian;
  • Provide environmental assessments to support the classroom
  • Provide coaching to early childcare providers in a manner that is culturally responsive to the child, family, and provider;
  • Complete assessments and individualized plans that involve the early childcare provider
  • Assist early childcare staff with appropriate referral information for identified children and families who may need more specialized services;
  • Participate in training modules, regularly scheduled statewide meetings, and supervisory observations;
  • Act as a liaison between family, early childcare provider, and other support agencies in the community;
  • Integrate prevention and intervention on a systems level by participating in systems and community collaboratives;
  • Work collaboratively with community agencies;
  • Provide public education regarding early childhood topics, through community presentations;
  • Provide required data and reports;
  • Significant travel to offsite locations within the region, in compliance with COVID restrictions;
  • Flexible hours to meet the needs of early childhood educators and childcare agencies (may require some meetings prior to 9am or after 5pm)
  • Maintains confidentiality of all client protected health information and adheres to all HIPAA related to policies and procedures;
  • Performs other tasks/responsibilities as required to support the program operations;
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior and cultural sensitivity in all activities involving individuals of diverse backgrounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in a mental health related field (psychology, social work, marriage and family counseling);
  • Extensive knowledge and a demonstrated level of expertise in the field, in early childhood development, emotional and behavioral health, family systems, assessment skills, childhood development, attachment/separation issues, behaviors of new mothers, young mothers and fathers, substance abuse, domestic violence, verbal/physical/sexual abuse/neglect issues, mental illness, failure to thrive, low birth weight infants, and children with physical and developmental disabilities.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Familiarity with early childhood care and educational systems and programs;
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to work on multiple tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent PC skills with demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Package (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Outlook); internet;
  • Training and public speaking skills;
  • Strong written and verbal skills required.
  • Verbal and written fluency in Spanish required.

Reports to: Director of Programs

Employment Type: Part-time. Due to the pandemic, much of the initial work will be done remotely, but eventually the consultant will be expected to travel to sites around Nassau and Queens Counties as needed, as well as to organizational headquarters in Roslyn, NY.

Start Date: Immediate                     Salary: Commensurate with experience and degree

Benefits: Reimbursement for travel and phone, paid time off

Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the candidate is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations. Requires visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application information. The candidate frequently is required sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear. Regularity and consistency of attendance is essential to ensure high quality service and ultimately a productive program.
